Prescription Drugs |
- Low income seniors, over 65 receive coverage for up to 70% of the cost of the prescription.
- Non-group coverage (eligible residents under age 65): pay 30% of the cost as well as a monthly premium. |
Dental Care |
- Individuals under 65 years of age only receive coverage for specific surgical procedures performed by a dental surgeon.
- For seniors 65 and up with low to moderate-income may apply for financial support from the Ministry of Alberta Seniors for extra coverage. |
Vision Care |
- The government covers annual check-ups for residents of all ages.
- Seniors with low to moderate-income receive coverage up to $230 every 3 years for prescription eyeglasses. |
Hospital Care |
- Basic hospital care accommodations are covered.
- Private or semi-private rooms are only covered if deemed medically necessary. |
Health Specialists |
- Podiatrist: maximum benefit of $250 per person per year.
- Physiotherapy: The total cost of physiotherapy is covered only for those with high priority need.
- Chiropractor: Low income seniors pay $25 per visit, and a maximum of $200 per year. |
Homecare and Nursing |
- Residents in need of community-based home care services may be required to pay a portion of the costs, based on assessed need. |
Ambulatory Services |
- There is no coverage for ground or air ambulance services except for hospital-to-hospital transfers.
- Seniors are covered through a plan administered by Alberta Blue Cross. |
Hearing Aids |
- There is limited coverage for the disabled, chronically or terminally ill under the Alberta Aids to Daily Living Program. |
Medical Equipment and Supplies |
- Seniors and in some cases, those with Alberta health benefits are eligible for coverage up to $600 for medical supplies such as lancets, syringes, needles, and blood glucose and urine test strips. |
